Chops required
The persistence of media and entertainment attracts a wide range of personalities and environments. It goes without saying that creative, innovative people are welcome, as are those with a knack for testing and prioritizing news, creating business plans, negotiating contracts, pitching and trading, selling and promoting or crunching numbers.
General job requirements include strong communication skills, ability to work well individually and in a team, operational issues, problem solving skills and knowing how to prioritize work and meet deadlines. Depending on the type of job, the payer may want to see that the seeker has social issues, has some ideas on where to start babbling for props, or can be helpful and effective when under pressure. A flexible station, tonal confidence, solid knowledge of the company and its players, and a decent sense of humor can help. For many jobs, it's also helpful to have a thick skin.
Most jobs in media and entertainment require a bachelor's degree, and some require a license and/or a degree in a trade. The most common bachelor's degrees are writing, editing, journalism, broadcast journalism, mass broadcasting, radio and television business, film, graphic design, fine arts, photography, business, business operations, non-profit operations, and theater.
